Alex Getelman is a respected presence in the New York construction and real estate industry and has overseen numerous successful projects. Maintaining a strong community presence, Alex Getelman serves on the board of the AHRC New York City Foundation. The non-profit organization serves the needs of 15,000 people with disabilities citywide by providing a broad spectrum of social services.
One of the annual fundraisers for the organization is the Thurman Munson Awards, which have been ongoing since 1980. The awards ceremony is held in memory of the former New York Yankees captain, whose life tragically ended in an airplane crash. The fundraising dinner’s affiliation with Munson reflects his community efforts on behalf of the Foundation while he was still alive. While Munson’s widow Diane felt that the organization was a worthy vehicle to continue his name, she believed initially that it would only last a few years.
Instead, the event has become an annual institution that has raised in excess of $13 million toward Foundation programs such as job training and summer camps for those with developmental disabilities. It also honors exceptional athletes in a variety of spheres, from Olympic champions to Yankees legends such as Bernie Williams, who recently received the Legend Award on top of his previous Munson Award.
