As head of Milestone Building Ventures, Alex Getelman guides complex New York construction projects that involve working closely with contractors, engineers, architects, and investment partners. Alex Getelman keeps a close watch on the real estate and construction markets, as well as high-profile projects in his industry.

One of the most prominent recent New York building projects involved the creation of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub at the site of the 9/11 attacks. A centerpiece of the 16-acre redevelopment zone, the transportation hub services approximately a quarter of a million commuters daily and includes retail space spanning 400,000 square feet. In addition, it offers internal pathways that link to the site’s office tower.

The large-scale project centers on the Oculus, a transit hall that has a design configuration evocative of a dove taking flight. Large quantities of glass and steel were used in constructing a wing-shaped shell that provides abundant interior light. A pair of large-capacity tower cranes were employed in hoisting steel pieces, which weighed up to 80 tons, as high as 185 feet.

The award-winning project was completed without serious incident through coordination with the New York City Fire Department, which undertook inspections on a weekly basis.
